Like most places that fall under the Sinosphere, law is very loosely enforced and it is for this reason people in these places are very sensitive to changes to democracy. Calling Hong Kong a police state is a significant understatement. Even more surprising are the expats who hail from places like the UK, USA and Australia. We talking real police states now.

I guess people got too used to a good thing. I am sure not many people will leave Hong Kong for this very reason.

Hong Kong Police Threaten Civilians with Tiananmen Massacre: "Don’t go! I want another June-Fourth Night!”

    2304 Tai Po
At Tai Wo Road, reinforcements arrived with escalating tensions between residents and riot police. A police officer shouted, “Don’t go! I want another June-Fourth Night!”

[Editor's Note: This refers to the Tiananmen Massacre in China. On 4 June 1989, Chinese soldiers, under the command of the Communist Party, brutally massacred thousands of peaceful student protesters who demanded democracy and freedom in China. “The streets were filled with the roar of guns and tanks, the siren of ambulances, the cry of men and women…” as one witness recalled. The massacre’s survivors were still being persecuted to these days]
