I just read an interesting quote on something that happened on the other side of the planet, in a different context, but it's interesting how valid it is for Hong Kong:

“The question for me is: At some point, will one side prevail? Will the government succeed in repressing its way out of this problem. I find that hard to believe.”

R. Dover and D. Jordan were out there today. Also interesting to note that Marine Police were in charge of crowd control today (yeah the same friendly neighborhood cops you see on Peng Chau or Cheung Chau).
