I left the cinema with my family a few weeks ago and, at that moment, protesters rushed out and blocked the roads and set the barriers on fire. None of us felt any concern/threat from protesters, until we heard the police sirens. A few of us cleared the barriers and everyone got out of there in our cars. Others ran

    No 1 fear = police

We've had several incidences of vigilante violence in the town near where I live on both sides including a pro-Beijing guy waving a meat cleaver in McDonalds and an anti-establishment guy stabbing that Junius Ho... aka, attempted political assassination.

    No 2 fear = vigilantes

My son used to have Latin Dance lessons near Long Ping and it was a wonderful thing that he could go there on the Westrail by himself. No more.

    No 3 fear = triads

In addition, I overheard my sons referring to the police as 'dogs'. They got this from other kids in the village who attend local schools, our kids are homeschooled. That scares me.

I actually fear a loved one being sent off to a brainwashing camp. Survivors recount MKUltra type strategies.

Is this far-fetched? Doesn't it make logical sense to use these camps? I can't persuade the yellows. Maybe a bit of torture can?

We need to keep an eye on people disappearing: who are they? What did they do? In XJ we've had seemingly innocent foreign nationals who are married to locals disappear.
HK is China... so what's the difference?

    Please tell me I'm overreacting.

You can also lump the hardcore protestors in this category

In the current climate shouldn't the education minister just stfu ? Show some common sense and lower the temperature : I am neutral but issuing an edict needs timing surely. It's just goading people now .

Despite your explanation, I still don't understand it.

So, if the protesters are young and "misled" , shouldn't the "ripe, old and wise" chaps in green "lead" them to the "right" path by not resorting to violence/assault/provocative actions? Remember, the protesters are YOUNG & MISLED .If you pepper spray them, don't expect a "Thank you, Sir/Madam. I just realized that I've made a mistake".

If you want to teach them, lead them- by being an example.

I'm not going to justify the extreme actions taken by the most radical end of the protesters (i.e. setting that man alight), because those actions are simply inexcusable.

The fact remains though, most of the serious violent action is perpetrated by the other side, police and gangs.

(as a reply to "At this point, can the police and the triads still be distinguished? Or should they be lump into one category?")

No you can't. I've not seen hardcore protesters yet who:
    - pepperspray random passers-by
    - beat up subdued people
    - beat up random people
    - knife people
    - disappear you, suicide you or send you to China

On the other hand I've seen plenty hardcores who:
    - helped women, kids and elderly people
    - handed out their masks to people hurt by tear gas
    - sacrificed themselves to let others escape.
And this I've not seen police or triads do.
