Unless they use hazmat suits with typical pneumonia, I think it’s safe to assume there’s some cause for concern over and above pneumonia. If mortality rates are similar to pneumonia but it’s more contagious, that alone in the absence of preventive measures will mean an elevated absolute number of fatalities.

I presume that pneumonia is treated in HK they best they can, and still the mortality rate is about >10% - but notice that mortality drastically increases for the 70+ age group.

If you are in the risk group take care, if not, just go on as usual.

Look als at the age data, very similar to SARS. Did you recall any young people that passed away? They weren't affected.

Actually the only reason I’m only alarmed rather than panicked is because of the differences from SARS (at this stage)

Estimates of SARS death rates revised upward | CIDRAP

The fatality ratio is less than 1% for people younger than 25, 6% for those aged 25 to 44, 15% for those aged 45 to 64, and more than 50% for people 65 or older, officials said.

Median age of those affected was 35 per report of those in Singapore. How it differed was it did impact the young, that’s why it was so scary.

Let’s hope it is, and stays, less lethal.

The few newspapers that reported on the disease were criticized by the local censorship department, and ordered to stop printing anything that had not been pre-approved. The National Secrets Law was enforced over news of the spread of the epidemic, and a blanket censorship campaign was launched.
On February 11, Zhang Dejiang asked health officials to call a press conference to say that there had been a disease, but that everything was already under control.
two concerns seemed to override the emerging health crisis: that in the name of social stability and to increase spending, the Lunar New Year holidays should pass smoothly; and that the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress, scheduled for March, would also proceed undisturbed.
For weeks, as the infection kept making people ill, Beijing denied anything untoward was taking place in the rest of the country, in spite of the public accusation launched on April 4 by Jiang Yanyong, a retired military surgeon that revealed in an email to CCTV leaked to the Western press that military hospitals were full of SARS patients. Finally, on April 19, when the respiratory disease had already infected thousands, the government decided to stop the cover up.

Like in an old Stalinist textbook, the top-down decision finally forced the Guangdong authorities to stop stalling and begin to cooperate with the Hong Kong health authorities and WHO.

It marked a low point in trust between Hong Kong and its new sovereign. Yet, as Zhang Dejiang landed in Hong Kong on Tuesday (May 17), he immediately recalled his “cooperation with Hong Kong over SARS,” and the government’s “victory” over the disease 13 years ago. Not many Hongkongers have rosy memories of that time.

Not been verified. Obviously more ballsy than other governments if true.

Not sure about the above, but if accurate, the coincidence in dates where there was no (reported) spread was quite remarkable eh.
