Effective taxes likely to go up to fund “long-planned” surprise initiatives announced by Carrie Lam.
Has 10 billion to give to the Ocean Park, but needs to scale back 10 billion in relief measures to the citizens. HK governance in a nutshell.

10 billion is around $1350 per person, or enough for 4 entry tickets. Will we get 4 free entry tickets in return for handing out all that money to a theme park?

Cary Huang is not exactly a pro-democrat commentator at the SCMP (not many are of course given the pro-establishment position of the paper), but his latest column is illuminating on how Beijing's action in HK has backfired for the CCP since that contributed to the support of the DPP and Tsai's election victory:

Looks like it is just squads of people wandering around. Does not really look like a rally is going to happen at Chater Garden.

Was there a specific cause for the release of the tear gas or (I suspect) the police just decided to randomly charge the crowd to terminate the gathering?

I am waiting to disperse...police have choked off many routes, crowd kept moving...I heard speakers but then it was called off. We are surrounded on all sides by police...

how likely would the UK or the EU pass into law something similar to America's Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019?

As I said elsewhere on the internet...
"this will obviously make people more supportive of police actions and more likely to condemn violent protesters" (sarcasm)
