If you look at page 7, despite the fact that everyone is wearing masks, staying home and there are increased hygiene and social distancing measures in place, 9 people in HK died of the Flu from Feb 16th - 29th, compared with 1 death of COVID-19 in the same period. This is also despite the flu vaccine being available and actually being administered to some of those who died. Why isn’t this in the news?
the numbers for flu are higher it's already endemic :
If we had rolled over and let corona have it's way it will be endemic too .
    So instead of 9+1death let's say 9+greater than 1
But due our diligence corona is still rare : everybody is working hard to stop this becoming an add on to flu mortality. And morbidity
That's why we corona is in the news flu ain't
People just don't want masses more bodies piled up on top the regular flu dead bodies our morgue already at capacity

Average age of Italy's coronavirus decedents is 81! I did not know this.

Yay for the Mediterranean diet I guess! And maybe old guys playing bocce ball, keeping in good health.

There are lots more stats that could be published that would be nice to know instead of having to dig them out of a Time magazine posting on Yahoo...

Yes, Italy has the largest population of citizens over 80 in Europe.
I think that explains also why it took them so long to realize they had the virus spreading in the country: an increase in the number of 80 year old people dying of pneumonia, in winter, is not that alarming and does not make the news.

Wow, that really IS like Japan! Amazing, I had NO IDEA. Yes, many old people (especially old men) dying of pneumonia, in winter, not going to raise the alarm in the beginning. Big blob of people my age- 55- guess Italy had the same baby boom after WWII as the US...

People will be analyzing all this data for years to come...

My totally unscientific approach is based on the personal knowledge of many smokers (in my immediate and extended family). They are always coming down with bronchitis, pneumonia, lung cancer, etc. My mother gave up smoking about 20 years ago in her 60's but has had several bouts with pneumonia in recent years.

More men are dying than women (and they smoke at a much higher rate) also air pollution damaging the lungs (lots of people in China). Iran, as I have said earlier, is big on hookah smoking which kills your lungs because it goes on for long periods of time...apparently Italy has quite the number of male smokers as well.
In US they always ask if you are a smoker so maybe US numbers will state whether serious cases and deaths were smokers.

I still say it is an epidemiological master's thesis waiting to be written...
Being a smoker I had a think about this and scrutinized my actions whilst smoking. There is definitely a higher risk, being a smoker, of being infected with Covid-19 through the action of bringing the cigarette up to your lips. Most smokers will hold their cigarettes at the butts with their fingers and when brought up to the lips for a puff, the fingers on most occasions touches the lips or the face around it. The vast majority of smokers are not going to sanitize their hands before lighting up.

But on the other hand, Italy has a large percentage of Chinese people:

The community of Chinese people in Italy has grown rapidly in the past ten years. Official statistics indicate there are at least 320,794 Chinese citizens in Italy, although these figures do not account for illegal immigration, former Chinese citizens who have acquired Italian nationality or Italian-born people of Chinese descent.

Thailand suspends visa-waivers for HK, Korea & Italy, and visa on arrival for China and all others.
