Seemingly nothing in the UK Chinese Embassy statement

    Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on BNO

    Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks on BNO
    2020/07/02
Q: The British side said it would provide more privileges for Hong Kong residents holding BNO passports. Do you have any comment?

A: Regarding the British National (Overseas) passport, or the BNO passport, in the memoranda exchanged between the two sides, the British side declares that it will not confer the right of abode to Chinese citizens in Hong Kong who hold BNO passports. It is made clear in the Explanations of Some Questions by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Concerning the Implementation of the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region that all Chinese compatriots residing in Hong Kong are Chinese nationals, whether or not they are holders of the British Dependent Territories Citizens passport or the British National (Overseas) passport.

If the British side makes unilateral changes to the relevant practice, it will breach its own position and pledges as well as international law and basic norms governing international relations. We firmly oppose this and reserve the right to take corresponding measures. We urge the British side to view objectively and fairly the national security legislation for Hong Kong, respect China's position and concerns, refrain from interfering in Hong Kong affairs in any way.

As crazy as it sounds, it is worth speculating on all (potentially nutty) ideas - given the general direction. However, in reality, that would really destroy HK even faster

On a more practical note: it could rapidly result in tighter visa restrictions for British Citizens (and American Citizens and other nationals) entering Mainland China

The BNO status does not give you the right to social welfare/ benefits, therefore if anyone who goes to UK needs to have savings or needs to find jobs, just when job cuts have started because the furlough scheme is bneing wound down.

Nope not spreading lies and misinformation..

APologies, I was sharing older news. - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-52844353

Before this scheme, BNO was not allowed to cliam government benefits. But as you said, with this scheme this hasn;t been clarified.

From what has been said by Raab, he has only explained the right to work and study and path to citizenship, and has not mentioned any changes around access to govenment benefits.

What I said could be true, seeing as under what was announced (based on no other changes), rights to universal credit are not accessible. They would have to announce changes to universal credit rule,. since only PR or settled status is eligible under current rules -

So rtather than parroting 'lies and fallacies' do some research.
At the end of the day, whetehr someone chooses to use the BNO status doesnt mean it will be all roses. The research needs to be done to see if it is more beneficial for them to move or not. Likely more beneficial for those who are more political, rather than those who are apolitical.

I think we are at risk of missing the key point here: it's not about BN(O) holders going to the UK to claim benefits, but about BN(O) holders (and their dependents) escaping Hong Kong.
