The chance of HK police actually getting their hands on these people are next to nil. No chance in hell they will be extradited to HK. So this is then strictly another political intimidation move. Will they be silenced? Or will this actually backfire by giving them a more prominent platform and "status" to advocate for their cause?

Anyone in Hong Kong who assists them - say, by donating to support them - is also guilty under the NSL...

Is the HK police laying groundwork to arrest Joshua Wong then? Seems like its only a matter of time.

But speaking of their arrest status, this might make them more prominent internationally. Cut-off from HK, but gaining status from abroad.

You mean like Tibet? A Tibet government-in-exile exist in India, but its hardly been successful in changing the political status, since Beijing still has a solid grip on Tibet. A HK gov-in-exile will likely have the same problem.

Exiled activists might gain access to Western political leaders, but not much else in terms of real influence.

Aside from Law and Cheng, I hadn't even heard of the other 4.

As for Cheng, what was his crime? Being released from prison in China and telling the world about his experience?

None of the accused can ever return to HK, of course. But also their families, who remain in HK, may be harassed and troubled, or worse, by even contacting them.

    Deeply fearful is the CCP.
