HK Beaches to Open - Nov 3rd

Enjoy the open air areas... don't freeze your rear ends off in the water.

In view of the latest situation of COVID-19, all gazetted beaches under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will reopen on November 3. According to arrangements adopted all along in previous years, lifeguard services at the reopened beaches from November to March are as follows:

Deep Water Bay Beach, Clear Water Bay Second Beach, Silverstrand Beach and Golden Beach will provide lifeguard services daily from 8am to 5pm after reopening.

Repulse Bay Beach, Middle Bay Beach, Stanley Main Beach, Big Wave Bay Beach and Silver Mine Bay Beach will reopen, with lifeguard services from 8am to 5pm daily until November 30. (Lifeguard services will be suspended from December 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021)

Lifeguard services at the remaining 29 beaches will be suspended after reopening until March 31, 2021.

The LCSD appeals to beach users to comply with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Prohibition on Group Gathering) Regulation (Cap 599G). The number of people in group gatherings should not be more than that as stipulated by the law. Members of the public should wear masks at all times when being present in any public place in accordance with the Prevention and Control of Disease (Wearing of Mask) Regulation (Cap 599I). To ensure appropriate distance between users of shower facilities, shower heads which are not within individual cubicles will be open but at 1.5 metres apart. The LCSD will step up cleaning work at the reopened beach facilities. Barbecue sites within gazetted beaches will continue to be closed.

The LCSD calls on members of the public to observe water safety while swimming. People should swim at the beaches only when lifeguard services are available. Please do not enter the water when the red flag is hoisted.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (November 3) that due to big waves, red flags have been hoisted at Big Wave Bay Beach in Southern District, Hong Kong Island; and Silverstrand Beach in Sai Kung District. Beach-goers are advised not to swim at these beaches.

In fairness some of the waves at Ham Tin and Tai Long on Sunday were as big as I've seen anywhere in HK. It made for decent enough body boarding or swimming with the wave and even surfers had some success..

These waves were 1 to 1.5 metres high and powerful enough to send me tumbling if I caught one wrong

Nothing by Cornwall and N Devon standards but it's completely different here. Back home those waves are forming a long way out, travelling a long way and exceptionally benign at the waterline. Over here there's still enough power close to the waterline to catch the unwary.

Either way yes it's ironic ,

I don't recall seeing any even in places like big wave bay...but I don't recall major drownings either...

Thankfully this is one closure that’s not enforced, I know a few typhoon surfers...
