Most minimum wage jobs are also in centres where accommodation costs are high. You face a choice: substandard, possibly illegal living conditions or a two hour commute for a shitty low wage job with high commute costs.

Up to a Million People Fleeing Hong Kong Might Suit China Just Fine

In time the exodus could remake Hong Kong’s political and financial landscape, with one study forecasting $36 billion in capital outflows this year alone. The flight will only accelerate the territory’s integration with mainland China, which has shown a willingness to pump people and money across the border, including by encouraging more Chinese companies to list in Hong Kong.

I don't think HKers are going to spend tens - hundreds of thousands of dollars on these visas just to work minimum wage jobs

Why would they need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on the visas?

I said tens to hundreds of thousands.

e.g to enter the UK each person needs to pay a £250 + a £3k NHS surcharge. For a small family that's already over $100k

I can understand the real reason for people wanting to move out for a better living environment, affordable and bigger housing, more comforts, etc. For the average Hongkonger earning 35-40k, his prospects in Hong Kong are dismal. He's constantly working at high octane level at this salary and at the end of the day doesn't have much to show for it.

Why aren't they citing moving for better living conditions as a reason to move?
To give one last middle finger to the government

If everything was good at home, no one would migrate.
