Real Reasons people are looking for a way out

I'm always reading that people are immigrating for "more freedom".

I can understand the real reason for people wanting to move out for a better living environment, affordable and bigger housing, more comforts, etc. For the average Hongkonger earning 35-40k, his prospects in Hong Kong are dismal. He's constantly working at high octane level at this salary and at the end of the day doesn't have much to show for it.

Why aren't they citing moving for better living conditions as a reason to move?

I always thought that was implied. Freedom to pursue the life you want without being limited by the property oligarchy colluding with the government to keep prices high. Hong Kong's high property prices and cost of living is a direct result of the lack of freedom and government accountability.

Not sure how moving without prospects of work to the UK in a massive recession is a better living standard

The living standard line was always a furphy to try and deflect from the various protest demands

Why have you decided on behalf of the people leaving what their reasons are?

There is no shortage of minimum wage jobs in the UK. Plenty of these jobs that can maintain a better standard of living than what the average Hongkonger is used to.

I believe that HK people are extremely pragmatic and for many of them moving is first and foremost a way to give themselves options and contingencies. I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone that doesn't have a relative of some kind that suffered significant hardship due to the CCP.

It's worth noting that hundreds of thousands came back to HK after the exodus in the 80s and 90s. I think we'll see a wave of people taking advantage of the UK, Canada and Australia's offer and some of them will come back once they have an alternative if HK remains somewhat free and for sure many also will not. Every country brings its share of challenges and pleasures and I have never believed that any particular country is objectively better than another. As they say, to each his/her own...

    Not true

F&B and Retail which is where most of these minimum wage jobs are are on its knees.

You’re getting pretty much hundreds of applicants for a waitressing job etc.

We’re in the shit here in the UK
