Cathay Trials "Digital Health Pass"

Not really major news, but seems like a step forward in a right direction.

Key take:

It was conducted with Los Angeles International Airport and Cathay Pacific. Other partners included The Commons Project, one of the major digital health pass developers for international travel, and Prenetics, a Covid-19 test provider.

Does not indicate how HK or other country vaccines will be added and more importantly does not provide any clues on which govts will accept the Commons Project app and underlying data which may or may not come from authorised sources.

The test did not involve any govt departments - just seems to involve HK Airport Authority and Cathay

The Airport Authority has finished the trial of a digital health pass at Hong Kong International Airport aimed at increasing efficiency of health document checks.

It was conducted with Los Angeles International Airport and Cathay Pacific. Other partners included The Commons Project, one of the major digital health pass developers for international travel, and Prenetics, a Covid-19 test provider.

Various countries have imposed requirements on visitors amid the pandemic. Hongkongers returning from overseas, for example, are required to present documents of having tested negative within 72 hours before boarding.

In the trial, air crew members of Cathay role-played as passengers and took the test at the airport's testing center. Results were sent to passengers through an app and in the form of digital health pass, which is presented on check-in.


On arrival at LAX, the passengers presented their pass to staff for validation and entered Los Angeles successfully.

This is not Cathay Pacific’s first trial of a digital health passport. Last year, the airline trial IATA’s popular Travel Pass on flights between Singapore and Hong Kong. For the airline, it’s a matter of getting familiar with various versions of digital health passports and hoping some of them stick and gain broad international acceptance.

Right now, the people and businesses behind various digital health passports are busy trying to stand out in a crowded and noisy environment. IATA’s Travel Pass is proving popular. Singapore Airlines is presently piloting it among passengers and crew on flights between Singapore and London. Air New Zealand is trialing it next month on flights between Auckland and Sydney.

CommonPass, developed by The Commons Project, a Swiss-based non-profit social enterprise keen to reboot travel, is also standing out from the crowd.

CX is trialling the CommonPass. Singapore airlines is trialling the IATA Travel Pass. Qantas has been trialling both of these for some time already, not sure which one they are going to pick or whether you can just have both and use either or when you are travelling overseas.

OK. So I have proof of my vaccination in the eHealth app, iAMsmart app and a paper certificate.

How would I transfer them into them digital health passes?

These are the yellow cards with vaccination records that are required for travel to/from many central African countries.

No doubt there's much greater value for these organizations in owning all of the data and forcing you to have their app on your phone.

So essentially we'll have to authorize the eHealth app to send info over to the IATA app, just like we authorize it to do so for the iAmSmart app...

Seems iAMsmart app can do a lot more other govie stuff like taxes and what not, whereas eHealth app is just purely for your Hospital Authority visits/treatments/records/history.

That's not too bad as long as customs in the arrival country recognize the paper certificate as well. Would hate to land and have an app malfunction and be held up.

Seems several apps will be needed depending on where you are going.

believe the eHealth presents your digital vaccine certificate and can authorize sharing of your health record btw public and private health services.

You can use the iamsmart app to authenticate yourself on government websites and do stuff like renewing your vehicle license. Kinda like the ecert you can get from the post office.
