    Sackings in SCMP

Heard through the grapevine that people have been fired from SCMP, reasoned as "cost saving measures" - it has been reported in the local media apparently but haven't encountered any English sources so far

To be fair they probably need cost cutting measures, does anyone still buy it?

I never understood scmp’s comments section. I thought they were generated by bots when I first read them

It's deliberate. The existence of a comment section increases their engagement metrics which they then show their advertisers.

Why would 1000's of highly aligned vitriolic rantings make you want to advertise in the rag?

Sad if this is true - losing a job is always difficult, and these times are worse than normal

Saying that, I notice that SCMP seem to have a big journalistic staff, and that is a rarity in modern newspapers.

They also have a very large media / PR type operation. I suspect that has been affected more than the news side of the business.

Will be interesting to see where the cuts have been made.

Why would I not be surprised if in-depth investigative journalists will be the ones to get axed. While those reporting..eh..."China business" will keep their jobs.
