More Hongkongers want the government to prioritise resuming travel to mainland China over destinations overseas should Covid-19 restrictions be relaxed, an opinion survey commissioned by HKFP has found. The results confirm Chief Executive Carrie Lam's assertion that it is "the common aspiration" of Hongkongers to resume mainland travel first.

Sorry I fail to see why this is a surprise. Demographics are everything. Family is everything and the simple fact is many locals extended families are from the mainland.

Much as it pains us expats it is an honest answer to a decent question. I actually welcome the fact that the media are starting to steer in this direction.

Fair enough, i guess frequent spikes in Covid cases overseas could also be the contributing factor plus some mysterious reasons like higher chances of contracting Covid in foreign country/on plane etc who knows..

Those who are likely / have time to answer potential advert call are quite skewed to the older demographics who also have closer ties to the Mainland.

The results differed by political persuasion, with pro-democracy-minded citizens preferring to see international borders reopen first. Among the respondents who identified as pro-establishment, 82 per cent chose visiting the mainland first. Whilst, of the 190 interviewees who labelled themselves as pro-democracy, 67 per cent picked overseas travel first.
Similarly, there was a generational divide, with younger respondents preferring international travel first. 59 per cent of the 482 respondents aged 55 or above selected mainland China as their priority destination, whilst – of the 193 interviewees aged 18 to 34 – 70 per cent opted for overseas travel first.

Are you saying the age distribution of the surveyed adults does not reflect the overall demographics of HK?



On another note - seems like the younger people are indeed voting with their feet and travelling overseas on one way tickets. Meanwhile the older folks who want to go across the border and back are a bit hampered. The Mainland remains one of the most restrictive borders right now for HK residents.
