At the first smell of smoke, or fire alarm, I am out of there. I'm not staying. because some management said stay.

I lived in a building once when the fire alarm went off at 2 am. The only people who left the building were expats and overseas chinese. The rest carried on sleeping.

    INteresting rread.

Fire but NO FIRE ALARM in the building, because the contractor who was renovating (which resulted in the fire ) switched off the fire alarms.....and management says, stay put....yeah, right..

Good thing the HK Fire Dept is still a world class disciplined service...

I've worked in loads of offices in HK and watched on with mirth (briefly) as the locals stay glued to their screen when the alarms go off. A few will look up, note that none of the other goldfish are moving, and go back to wasting time online.

People who live and work in tower blocks, not reacting to fire alarms - you couldn't make it up.

The local news said that cops were asking the spectators outside if they had friends or family still in the building and if so to ask them where in the building they were. I'm guessing those stranded were those who wandered off by themselves and found they couldnt get down/out due to the smoke/fire and then went up.

Guess my friend was lucky all the people in the shop stayed together and the owner was able to speak directly with the fire brigade on her mobile and were able to be escorted down as a group in safety. Phew!

Another item for the gratitude journal today!
Good that she got out ok, but anyone telling you to stay in a high rise building when there's a fire in it should be routinely ignored - especially if it's a 'shopkeeper' relaying the message (did he/she have a flowery apron?).

There is only one bit of sage advice: Get the fuck out - immidately.

I once met friends for a meal in Chungking Mansions. There was a long queue for the elevator going up and after the meal we decided to walk down the stairs to avoid waiting for the lift. The passage down the staircase revealed shoddy, exposed electrical work and boxes/junk blocking doors and obstructing walk ways. I don't even want to think about what it would be like to get out of that place if there were a fire.

Chungking was renovated and refurbished a few years ago, supposedly to improve its somewhat shady reputation. Haven't been there since its major renovation though. Is it just as bad as the "old days"?
