Have we seen people / outlets who ask awkward questions persistently but factually and respectfully taken out?

HK Free Press is a great asset - independent, publish critical analysis, but not over-the-top or infantile/gossipy in the way some of the other non-government outlets like Apple Daily were at times.

Maybe HK Free Press survives because the NSL Police can't read English? Presumably they would eliminate even token critical voices if they really wanted to.
