UPDATE FROM ESF: SCHOOL BUS INVOLVED IN ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT
Shortly before 08:00 this morning (Thursday 31 August, 2023) a school bus travelling to ESF Discovery College in Discovery Bay, Lantau Island was involved in a road traffic accident with a commercial service bus.

Emergency services have attended the scene and are dealing with the situation. There have been injuries as a result of this incident and those requiring treatment have been transported to hospital.
Staff from the school and from ESF are on-site and are offering support as required. Contact is being made with the parents of the students who were travelling on the bus – and ESF staff are liaising directly with the bus operator.

Horrible news. Such a dangerous road.

Very sad. Obviously don't know the details, but I remember fearing for my life more than once with the way buses would drive on South Lantau, especially at night.

This was the road that runs from Sunny Bay - past DB to Tung Chung.

The crash occurred at 8am on Cheung Tung Road near the Discovery Bay tunnel toll plaza when the school bus - filled with ESF Discovery College pupils - allegedly swerved into the opposite lane and collided into a bus heading from Discovery Bay to Sunny Bay.

The school bus crashed into trees, with its front driver's side seriously damaged and the windscreen of bus DB03 shattered. Nine firetrucks and 21 ambulances, with 81 firemen and ambulance men, arrived seven minutes later.

I’m sick to death with minibus drivers on phones (I don’t care if they’re hands free). I actually feel safer on the red minibus between Sai Kung and Mong Kok than I do with some of the green minibus drivers. A couple of days back got into a taxi with four phones on the dash. He proceeded to use two of them while driving and speaking on the phone. I thought they were supposed to be reviewing that and limiting to one device.

Completely agree. Particularly on school buses that have a bus mother, there is zero need for a phone to be anywhere near the driver. It'd like to see it a requirement that it stays in their bag.

Is there anything suggesting that phones are relevant to this incident?

Something caused the driver to be driving on the wrong side of the road and he's now been arrested. Might have been a phone, maybe he fell asleep, maybe he was adjusting the radio. I think people just observing that the use of phones by minibus drivers (and taxis) is very concerning.

Sorry no. It’s just a general observation on the standard of some of the public/taxi drivers.
