Funny how during compulsory hotel all of the social justice warriors were up in arms about the amount of plastic in their rooms but now not having plastic water bottles, tableware, silverware or takeaway vessels is the sign of a nanny state.

Maybe just maybe there's more than one type of human being with one opinion?

I didn't know we can get fined for climbing over barriers. I do it all the time. Guess I should stop.

I have gotten crap for saying cyclists should be licensed before they can ride on public roads and bikes must have license plates, now I extend that call to saying pedestrians should be licensed to walk on major roads and should carry 6x6 inch QR codes hung from their necks.

How many of these 56 pedestrians dying were due to them jaywalking? Either way I am in favour of fining people who jaywalk in busy or dangerous crossings. But I hope they fine based on the context of the intersection, time of the day/night etc and that's not based on a straight application of the law.
Probably very few. The safest countries for pedestrians are those WITHOUT jaywalking laws. Jaywalkers generally look carefully before crossing the road. You look both ways regardless of the official direction of traffic, and make an assessment on if you can cross based on how far away the next car is. I'd guess that those who would never dream of jaywalking somewhere it's illegal are those who will blindly cross when the green man flashes, without having so much as glanced at the road...

One time in New York I was told to "get a move on, Bud".

    The law is two parts
    1. 15m from lights, zebra crossing, uncontrolled crossing which says look left, look right but have no lights (I think), flyover, subway, etc.....
    2. provided there are no fences, barriers or mystical neon-orange tape on either side of the road or in the middle).
I found the law (CAP 374G Regulation 39). That's really interesting. Several decades in Hong Kong already, I realize I've been jaywalking all wrong. I thought I was on safer ground closer to the traffic light, but it's the opposite.

So, I can jaywalk anywhere, as long as it's 15m from the traffic light and there is no centre barrier or curbside fence. This actually makes me want to jaywalk more now, not less! Not sure this is the campaign's desired effect.

Yep and certain Geoexpaters should be breath tested when exiting the FCC.
