    "Jaywalking" Crack Down...

Not that any of you folks are likely to jaywalk... but might want to let your friends and family know.

Starting today, officers - including plainclothes cops - will issue tickets without warning to those who fail to abide by traffic signals, climb over roadside fences, or endanger their own or other's safety when crossing the road.

Offenders will be fined up to HK$2,000, according to Road Traffic (Traffic Control) Regulations.

Being English this one has always confounded me. I can’t cross at a traffic lights unless the pedestrian signal is green but I can cross the road elsewhere (assuming it is pavement to pavement and I’m not jumping over barriers etc? Is that right?

"The campaign came after the force recorded a total of 85 fatal traffic accidents from January to October, the highest number since 2020, with 56 pedestrians dying."

How many of these 56 pedestrians dying were due to them jaywalking? Either way I am in favour of fining people who jaywalk in busy or dangerous crossings. But I hope they fine based on the context of the intersection, time of the day/night etc and that's not based on a straight application of the law.

"The force had launched a three-week citywide enforcement action in August and September to combat pedestrians and drivers who violate traffic regulations, with nearly 1,800 pedestrians being fined."

    How many drivers were fined?
How many of the 56 pedestrians were killed due to the driver's fault?

As long as not within 15 metres of a marked crossing I think...

~70% of pedestrians killed are over 65
~25% of jaywalkers caught are over 65

The accidents probably have a lot more to do with road design and double parking than just driver behavior.

I see elderly folks jaywalking at a super slow speed all the time. It amazes me why they would even do it. Sometimes they barely even look. When you jaywalk, you surely want to do it quickly and make sure to look carefully before you do.

What’s the psychology in running across a road without looking, especially with a child?

I saw this video last week. Mother & Daughter both hit, Daughter seemed ok, not sure about the mother?

It doesn’t matter which country you’re in. The elderly will always have a higher fatality rate, even in developed areas.

Elderly tend walk more slowly due to age related issues, with reduced mobility, eye sight, hearing etc

For example in the EU in 2019 48% of fatalities were aged 65 or older.
