2024 HK Budget - "Handout & Bailout" calls...

Trying to bring together a bunch of calls from various groups for bailouts and handouts to prop up various sectors of Hong Kong's economy,

    01/16: HK Listed Stocks

For the upcoming budget, the Hong Kong Institute of Financial Analysts and Professional Commentators has suggested that the government raise the proportion of the Exchange Fund's investment in the stock market, which can be used to buy shares of some quality listed companies.

Their call came as Hong Kong stocks inched lower yesterday while other Asian markets rose.

    14/01: Afterhours vouchers

The government may consider delivering night-time consumption coupons to boost the economy together with the business sector, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong (CMA) suggested, as the Budget is set to be delivered next month.

The president of CMA, Lo Kam-wing, said on a radio program that the change in lifestyle habits following the global pandemic has led to citizens returning home early and not shopping at night.

this will be a long list, but I am sure many will not be made public.

(I have come to the conclusion that HK has become a rent seeker economy)

given that most incentive money including consumption vouchers ultimately end up in the hands of the oligarchs, the gov't might as well just cut CKH and Jardines a check and cut out all of the middlemen.

It boggles my mind why they insist on forcing people to go out at night? Whats so great about the nighttime?

The fact that you can't see the smog as well as the daytime???

There's another option and that's for these companies to actually compete for customers by dropping prices or providing good customer service.

No chance of enough throughput in daylight hours to make the rentals sustainable...

HK is more crony capitalism system but possibly headed towards a worse state due to fewer checks and balances.

Countervailing view: if HK gets into too much financial shit due to our inept leadership (probable), the mainland will find some undercover ways to cut us a few cheques and keep our low tax, free-wheeling lifestyles continuing.

On the other hand, due to the ineptness, HK sends its cash up north into the new 1T RMB bond issue..
