The Atlantic: Hong Kong Is Self-Destructing

    Non-paywall: https://archive.is/Wlb8W

    Excerpts:
    - The city’s lawmakers won’t try to solve its problems. They’re too busy mimicking Beijing.
    - they are feverishly obsessed with security and with integrating Hong Kong into the mainland. For them, governing appears mainly to consist of mimicking Beijing or trying to predict what it wants from them.
    - Many lawmakers have taken part in study trips to the mainland to learn about policies and innovations. Photos show groups of them staring, enraptured, at mundane pieces of infrastructure or studiously hunching over their notebooks as they are lectured about the greatness of China’s achievements.

A small, inefficient government will not self destruct Hong Kong.

A large, inefficient government would do the trick.

How does this compared to developed economies per capita? Can't be bothered to do the maths, since I don't have any grand fatherly wisdom..

I think self-harming would be a better description because Hong Kong will survive despite them and those up north - but then the government is not harming themselves but their people.

The Altantic do not appear to understand Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is neither self-destructing nor self-harming.

As intended, the entire HKSAR government machinery, the local press and the gods are all working for the benefits of 0.01% of the local population, as stipulated by Article 5.

Hong Kong is doing extremely well.

Unfortunately I’m unable to translate, but one should question if the SCMP’s “interpretation” is necessarily accurate.
