Octopus to work in 300 mainland cities

Not sure if this is a Unionpay or some other new sort of card. Cannot find a press release for this.

Octopus is set to launch a new card by the end of this month that will revolutionize public transportation in over 300 cities in mainland China.

Sammy Kam Chi-sam, chief operations officer of Octopus, said: "The new physical card will enable citizens to conveniently pay for their fares in approximately 320 cities on the mainland."

Users will be able to recharge the card in Hong Kong dollars, and it will automatically convert the payment to renminbi, the official currency of China, he said.

More info today in The Standard.

Hongkongers can use the new Octopus-China T-Union Card to travel in more than 336 mainland cities starting today.

"Customers will be able to use the card to pay for transport fares anywhere in the mainland with the China T-Union logos," Octopus Cards said.

The new card can be used in 38,000 public bus routes, 285 rail transit lines, as well as ferries in over 336 mainland cities.

The card costs HK$88 and can be purchased at all Circle K stores and MTR customer service centers at seven designated MTR stations - Sheung Shui, Lok Ma Chau, Fanling, Tsuen Wan, Kowloon Tong, Hung Hom and Admiralty.

Credit Cards can be used in MTR, buses etc now. And I think almost all stores accept CC also nowadays. The reason to carry an octopus card is decreasing quite fast. I guess for kids giving them an octopus instead of a CC still will make sense for a long time.

I think it's a good idea for HK-ers, esp people like me who arent great at using alipay hk/wechat apps, and T-union is valid across most of the bigger cities on the Mainland. Another option is always good. That said, alipay HK on the shenzhen MTr was super easy once I figured out you have to use a different QR code...

Comparison: Octopus. Nationwide Pass | China-Hong Kong cross-border transportation card. There are two things to note before buying a new card.

Not really excited about this. I prefer using the dual wallet cards with a separate RMB wallet. Of course all of these sorts of cards are just too expensive, and financially it makes more logical sense to just buy two separate cards because it would be much cheaper, but sometimes it is convenient to have one card.

Don't forget the ever-rising proportion of us (25% and rising) who need a special Octopus card to get the $2 fare. Sadly I don't see any mention of a card combining JoyYou and the mainland travel capability.

Thats true, elderly and kids gonna be rockin Octopus forever, the rest of us can just finally leave it. Would just be perfect if Taxis now all introduced Octopus but not CC
