It's about time they got on with this. It's been eight years since the South Island Line (East) opened. With construction not likely to start until 2027, it will have been something like a 15 years' wait for this one.
Yes, a private business owned 75.09% by the Government of Hong Kong.
But forget that part. The reality is MTR doesn't make money off of digging expensive tunnels and building lines and transporting people. It uniquely makes money off of the land in and around stations.

Now that we are still in a property crisis (hence the HK government budget showing huge losses every year) it doesn't convince me MTR could still build at this and sell profitable malls and housing developments like it did a few years ago at this point in time.

So their business model is like those group trips when the coach takes you to a totally independent coffee shop, restaurant, or "tourist attraction" off the beaten track and you've no choice but to go in.
