I think people have mentioned online shopping already.

But going out with friends recently, I see something that looks pretty cool in a shop for $300. My friends take a photo and find it on Taobao for RMB30 including shipping. Even if I buy my friend a drink for their help, I'd save enough to make it worth waiting a day or so.

Yea if the real actual exact same thing costs 1/10th the price I am shocked. Likely it's yet another knockoff. To each their own.

The product I saw wasn't a branded item. It was just a brand less toy. I'm guessing most of the mark-up is to cover rent, salaries and business costs in HK before they get to their profit margin. They can't get by on just a 100% mark up on a RMB30 product.

Also brings a new population which is much more willing to pop back across the border for the bargains at the weekend

Not sure the exact nuance of your sentence. But go to Singapore orchard road and check out the condo apartments along the stretch .. its all gobbled up by rich indonesian and malaysian chinese.. and these days mainland, laos, vietnamese, thais... etc etc...

The locals are doing hardworking job.. no doubt, and it runs on a fairly efficient model getting FDIs to set up large bio-pharma factories, etc, which HK does not really have.. But those factories do not hire many people.. manufacturing are really dropping out of the picture these days.. its all about services and trying to find ways for your compliance department to approve the money you bring in from anywhere in the world.. My private banking friend inherited accounts from Kazastan, Russia, etc.etc..

And also the reality of it, money are actually flowing back into hk from sgp. According to guys that run solid but marginally compliant type of companies.. why ? because after the huge case of money laundering caught in singapore, banks in sgp just didn't want to take the risk and are closing accounts of customers that cannot meet their internal 'source of funding' criteria...

If only they would buy more potatoes, onions and tomatoes at our local fresh food markets. (Which was the original point of some of my posts...)

Why are fresh food sales down dramatically? I don't know if the online delivery services are filling in the gaps.
