    Very simple.

If you can't take the stairs safely, take the lift. If you can take the stairs but need to keep still, stay right. If you are want to get to your destination quicker, take the left.

It's the same for cars and we have the same functionality.

Stop making a situation complex, if everyone abided by the rules above, we'd be fine but it's the people who switch sides, that's the issue.

People get into car accidents, same as on lifts. Stay in your lane!

I walk and the width of the stairs is too narrow walking down and some have these ridges to prevent skidding but I have tripped over them. I have long legs and the rise in the escalator steps is much easier for me. Also the second the stairs get wet, they are slippery and lethal.
Most people in Taiwan get it and stand to the right.
Also great exercise since I more or less run up them when no one is in front of me, gets the heart beating and all that.

Damn, just saw a new sign on the Taipei MRT to stand on both sides of the escalator, the entire world is conspiring against escalator walkers, I am now a persecuted minority. I will be starting a support group at once and begin a legislative campaign to recognize my rights.

FWIW, I had surgery last year, and for several weeks of the rehab I was walking with one crutch (I think it's called an "elbow crutch") on my right arm. Pretty much forced me to stand on the left side of the escalator. At first I was way careful, tried to wait until the lines had thinned out, etc., but it turned out that no one seemed to mind me standing on the left.

Very little of this was Island side, not sure if there would've been more resentment there.

Also, people were way nice about giving me seats, which, tbh, i didn't really need but turns out there are a lot of people here who don't feel comfortable sitting down when there's some dude with an elbow crutch standing.

People who don’t want to walk, should be encouraged to walk, not vice versa.

Escalator capacity may well be more efficient at peak times if everybody stands stil, but fuck that, Hong Kong is constantly trying to drag those who think and act freely down to the level of the lowest common denominator
    .(Which is pretty damn low).

Suffice to say I will be walking on the left….don’t get in my way.

Lol what are you going to do at rush hour when both sides are full of people standing? Are you going to act like a nutter?

Fine, from 8 to 9 am both sides stand, we walkers are willing to compromise. Otherwise, let us move. We are the ones not walking around staring at our phones. Those people don't care if they wait another 30 seconds because, hey! a new TikTok video or whatever.
