    What MAB writes above:
    1) I'm very seldom on the MTR at rush hour, and living in Sheung wan I'm generally going against the flow anyway.
    2) If the entire escalator is full of the lazy then I'll wait - This almost never happens for me.
    3) When it's a few people not walking on the left it's almost always the fault of one individual - often on their phone, so I'll do whatever it takes - squeeze past the lower ones to get to the problem child and deal with them; simple, effective and proportionate.

The point is the escalator system already works fine - At certain places in rush hour people make it work.

By encouraging people to stand on the left you have 18 other MTR hours per day where you will get get anal HK idiots pointlessly standing on the left - The same anal idiots who insist on standing in the stupid tram lines in front of the MTR doors (pretty much 3/4 of the population) that restrict the movement of people trying to get off the train.

So combine fuckwit policy makers (contrast the much more intelligent MRT tram lines in Singapore) with anal HK idiots and you have the perfect "It's not broke so let's fuck it up" scenario

OK, took a bunch of different MRT lines today, only that one station (Guting) said to use both sides. People still standing to the right.

As someone else said, there is a special place in hell for the people who run in front of you and then stand on the left (usually on the phone). I had a 9 or so year old boy do this to me last year and then turn around like what are you going to do about it? In a rare move (that I would not have done if he had not deliberately run in front of me and then turned around and gave me a look) I just kept barreling upward, more or less pushing him out of the way- his father grabbed him and pulled him over, saying something to him (parents still chastise their kids for doing this kind of thing, the last vestiges of parental authority).

Yup, petty AF, don't care. In my day, an adult would have just yelled at us to get out of the way, that was back when any adult could call out any kid. Or, worse, if they knew your parents, report you back to them. I got in trouble for not saying hello to someone (she told my mother) when, honestly, I don't even remember seeing her anywhere. So, yes, you kind of behaved better since you would otherwise get called out or in trouble.

What is with you guys and "a special place in hell"?

It's just such a minor tiny thing and you all overreact like someone killed a loved one of yours

try doing it on the London Underground - and especially in rush hour. Good luck with that!

Figure of speech, not actually meant seriously- like, "this is the hill I choose to die on" typically for a stand over a minor item.

there is a special place in hell for (someone)

(redirected from a special place in hell)there is a special place in hell for (someone)

Said of a person whom one considers to be especially wicked, evil, malevolent, etc. Often used facetiously or sarcastically. There is a special place in hell for the conniving snakes who defraud vulnerable people over the phone.Ugh, did you see that jackass? I tell you, there's a special place in hell for jerks who cut people off in traffic!

I was going up the escalator at Sai Wan Ho with my wife, it was very quiet so she stood on the right and me next to her in the left. Heard then saw someone was walking fast behind me so being a normal human being I moved across to the right.

Except no one passed us and when I looked no one was there. Spooky goings on in Sai Wan Ho. Perhaps they need to include ghosts in the regulations?

Maybe it was someone like me. If the queue to stand on the escalator is long, will go start off on the left. Keep walking if somebody else behind me wants to walk.

80% of the time I will find a 3 step gap (pisses me off when people do this when the escalators are crowded) so I can comfortably go back to the right. Balances my impatience, the desire to maximise the throughput of the system and consideration for others that do want to walk.

If I do have to walk the whole way, am fine with the exercise anyway.
