My alternative scenario is that in the absence of the Occupy movement Beijing's approved list of CEs and their policies would have been rather more benign than the police state administered by Lee and Tang that we have now. Remember that in those days solid, if boring, administrators like Sir Donald Tsang were approved by Beijing.

Donald Tsang and his ilk were products of Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, obviously not deer leader.

I agree, but I would also add that the great reformer Deng was the last guy before Jiang (who was the boss when I arrived in HK). There's only been 4 in the last 46 years.

And the great reformer was the same hand behind BJ89. The central path never really changed....yet, it just took a few light curves on route.
