We all know this would happen. Here, we have elections, rule of law, strong parking regulations, no shop blockage on sidewalks, red lights above pedestrians' cross walks, most Pandas outside China, can walk up and down escalators, and $2.00 travel for 60 and above.

They've been jailed for years already, what 5? So will that time count towards time served of their sentence? Could a 7 year sentence mean only 2-3 years more?

Time spent in jail is time served - so yeah ... x years in jail - sentence

After all these how many years will sure be able to find a reason to lock up for some more years. For prudence.

Those who have been in custody on remand since the main batch of arrests have, in effect, already served 3 years and 8 months of their sentences. So I would expect the first batch of people (Claudia Mo etc) to be out in about 6 months time.

    Very depressing day.

Was just getting used to some semblance of normal life in HK, and then this happens. Really makes one question things.

Regardless of right or wrong, at least we now know where the red lines are and the cost of crossing them.

Well since what they have been convicted of is something explicitly allowed by law, I'm not convinced. It seems to me that the "red line" is whatever upsets the Emperor or his minions. And that will always be at the whim of the Emperor. For me the most interesting outstanding question, since the Emperor ruthlessly purges any rivals, is what comes next. I'm somewhat younger than him, so I hope that I will live to find out.

So Mainland style sentencing. Everyone is guilty, and if you are innocent you are sentenced to something close to the time you've already spent in jail and released.
