Baidu given "Autonomous Driving" test license...

Called it ages ago .. it would have to be a Chinese company that will get the first autonomous test license in Hong Kong.

Looking forward to hoards of photographers and taxi drivers heading to North Lantau to mess with that one test car.

Baidu Apollo International Ltd was approved to conduct trials for 10 autonomous vehicle in North Lantau, according to a statement released by Hong Kong's Transport Department on Friday.

The license will be valid from Dec. 9, 2024 to Dec. 8, 2029, with only one self-driving car operating on specified road sections at a time in its first phase, according to the statement.

Considering the age and reliability of minibus drivers in HK, I'd take an imperfect driverless one any day of the week over the current ones.

Hong Kong should get autonomous buses soon; maybe before the establlishment of the Northern Metropolis.
