That said I'm currently searching flights to Taipei. The cheapest option was Cathay via HKG. I passed. I can take a direct flight on a Taiwan-based carrier but I'm willing to fly two legs on a shitty, U.S.-based carrier because the Chinese are less likely to shoot a United Airlines plane out of the air vs. EVA or China Airlines.
In USA now, did the Taipei/HK/NYC to get here on Cathay and will do it on the way back (there is no good route to Myrtle Beach, SC...). It was pretty good and several HUNDRED USD cheaper than anything else (I think around 900 USD rountrip so...yeah. Did the uber-cheapo ticket only one suitcase, don't pick your seat until online check-in. Whatever. Also shortest time other than direct-only about 1 hour longer so, again, whatever).

A couple of San Francisco-based friends just visited St. louis six weeks ago because they had vouchers for a free stay the Ritz Carlton. They enjoyed it. Were shocked by how cheap things were.

Yup, it's cheap, as is Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland. I have been to St. Louis and lived in Baltimore and Cleveland. And yet, would not rate them (on a world scale) above places like Hong Kong.

I lived there for a decade and mostly liked it - air pollution and internet gradually became major issues. Saw them raze most of the hutongs and "slum" dwellings - replace them with high rises, most of which look the same. And most of which don't age well.

I might be back - but - at least to me - a less interesting city today than it was before.

Clearly written by an american with incredible bias. I didnt count but it seemed like at least 25% of those were in the US.

Also having Birmingham and Doha above Hong Kong is also ludicrous.

I kind of agreed with the list until reaching spot 12 - San Francisco - hahahah what are they smoking? Maybe the same thing all the bums roaming the streets of SF smoke..

Edit: It just get more hilarious, Denver one spot above Copenhagen.

    Yay. We're 97! We're 97!

Edit: all league tables are a load of rubbish, even the ones that give me the result that I want to hear.

This is quite an irrational worry in choosing what flights to take, even in the current climate. One can argue you might be safer on a Taiwanese airline as their crew are much more familiar with airspace restrictions in the area. Nevertheless, ATC will be barking at any aircraft well before they veer off track too far in the wrong direction.

Videos made around the time that I (briefly) lived in a Cleveland suburb and pretty accurate. Makes London look sunny and tropical, just sayin'...

Seriously? Detroit is ahead of HK? That's a new low for HK....
