That said I'm currently searching flights to Taipei. The cheapest option was Cathay via HKG. I passed. I can take a direct flight on a Taiwan-based carrier but I'm willing to fly two legs on a shitty, U.S.-based carrier because the Chinese are less likely to shoot a United Airlines plane out of the air vs. EVA or China Airlines.

This is quite an irrational worry in choosing what flights to take, even in the current climate. One can argue you might be safer on a Taiwanese airline as their crew are much more familiar with airspace restrictions in the area. Nevertheless, ATC will be barking at any aircraft well before they veer off track too far in the wrong direction.

I love that we are behind Bangkok. I just got back from there last week and the differences are stark. Bangkok keeps developing, new malls, big renovations, new stores, new hotels, whereas I see HK ... yea... well we got things shutting down.
