Taxis to accept electronic payments - 2026

The headline is about dashcams and internal cameras, but the more interesting news is progress towards matching Singapore's taxi standards from about 10+ years ago - accepting electronic payments!(!!!!!!!!!)

According to documents submitted by the Transport and Logistics Bureau to the Legco's Panel on Transport, authorities are proposing amendments to relevant legislation, mandating taxis to be equipped with cameras in taxi compartments, dashcams, and GPS navigation systems. All taxi drivers must also accept electronic payment methods.

    2026 is way too early.

Maybe we could combine it with electrification, you know, like Shenzhen had for a decade now. ePayment and EV Taxi for all taxis, I'd guess 2047 or so. If we are lucky.

EV-fication of the taxi fleet would be a complete shitshow in HK.

Can you imagine the 70 year old drivers hitting the accelerator / brakes to regen... Insurance nightmare waiting to happen.

Now if they can push for some ePayment standards for wet market and other licenses, we'd be arriving into 2010 by 2026.

The key element of the proposal from the commies' point of view is that not only must all taxis have cameras, they must stream in real-time to government servers. In combination with facial recognition software, this will enable them to track us all much more efficiently.

I have to say that I haven't experienced that problem in the EV taxis that I've taken - they've been very smooth.

What is the causes of problem for Taxis in HK?

Too few licenses held by too few people?

Perhaps legislation is needed to force the adoption of electronic payment but it could probably also be solved by only allowing licenses to be held by drivers and limiting the working hours therefore removing the 'cartel' effect of license holders that scalp a few extra % if electronic payment is used.

This all seems overly complex and designed to keep the money flowing to vested interests.

Is HK not threaten by ride sharing app like Uber/Lyft? Taxi in other cities are seeing sufficient decline to take action to make ridership better... The West, China, etc...

I am surprise to see Taxi in HK is cash only... Than again, I rarely take taxi in HK as they are super expensive. But still, someone that comes into Hk for the first time would most likely needing a Taxi the most and you telling them cash only.... Jesse... Hk is suppose to be international....
