i feel like this issue is overblown. Guangdong uses Putonghua as its national language, but Cantonese has not died out. People still speak their home dialect whether it be Shanghainese, Sichuan, Wenzhou. There's no chance of these dying out. Likewise, HK isn't losing its Cantonese because of Beijing government.
Hell, even Taiyu in Taiwan couldn't be wiped out despite all the KMT attempts.
HK just needs to accept this and get on with learning Mandarin.
