HKTaxi App - No More (April 2025)

Important announcement from the HKTaxi platform

    Dear valued HKTaxi riders,

We are announcing an important decision which we believe will serve you better.

The HKTaxi app will be discontinued by April 1, 2025*. We invite you, along with other loyal riders, to switch to the Uber app. We are doing this because we believe that the Uber app will create a more convenient and seamless experience for you, and has the features we know you love.

Here are just some of the reasons why the Uber app is the best mobility choice in Hong Kong:

Meter Taxi option with an upfront discount feature: You can continue to enjoy the popular Meter Taxi on the Uber app with a feature to request your driver for an upfront discount of 15% off.

Uber connects you with the most trip options in Hong Kong: In addition to Meter Taxi, you can also choose Uber Taxi or other options, such as Uber Pet, Uber Assist and Uber Reserve. Your travel needs will be taken care of under most, if not all, circumstances.

Enhanced customer support and platform experience: Uber has enhanced safety features, including GPS tracking and 2-ways rating. Every ride on the Uber app is insured, and Uber's team will standby 24/7 to help you resolve issues relating to your trips.

New users promos: Newly registered users from HKTaxi will receive HK$100 off for the first 5 Uber Taxi trips. T&Cs apply.

That f app has been dead for months. I literally never got a taxi from it. It goes "sending to 200 drivers, 600, 3000....". Still nobody. Good riddance. Belonged to Uber anyway. Just another local software gone for good.

Pity - I found it pretty reliable outside of peak/heaviliy raining times.

While I'm at it, also deleting Tada. Gave it 5 chances from various places, no drivers matched 4 times. 1 time waited 10 mins and he cancelled.

With the taxi fare hikes and a constant stream of promo discounts uberx or uber taxi is cheaper than the meter for me most of the time.

I never tried "hailing" one in RT so can't tell if they're fast, have geo coverage, etc

I get that experience if I try to get a taxi short distance - I live up on a hill and takes at least 10 mins from Lai Chi Kok/Lai King/Kwai Fong area, so drivers usually wouldn't accept, unless they happen to be within a 3 min drive. Apparently, the drivers get charged whenever they accept an HKTaxi app request, even if the potential passenger doesn't show up/rejects the acceptance. Anywhere that takes at leat 20 min to destination, usually no prob, especially if I add a $10 tip.

That's why I have a regular cabbie, Jackie, who picks me up daily to the Lai Chi Kok MTR- he has a set daily schedule, as his passengers have become his regular in the area, even becoming friends of sorts.

I don't quite get it- so Uber is fully legalized, OR just the app is legalized to hail 'Uber Taxis' under the HK Taxi umbrella?
