    Search " "

Hi! How can search for certain word combinations, e.g. "weekend away" such that only threads are shown where "weekend away" is mentioned and not all threads with "weekend" and/or "away". Thanks.

type type "weekend away" into the search box.

    Did that not work?

    Try it on http://www.geoexpat.com/forum/search.php

Try this without the quotes "weekend and away" -- it should work. I fixed a permission issue where we had not allowed this type of search for non-admins.

Just tested out "fringe and chicago" and that brought up the right threads. You might want to wait a little bit for the "weekand and away" search as searches get cached for a few hours (12-24) and try some other creative searches.

    AND, NOT and OR work.

Searches can include all combinations "(weekand and away) not bangkok"

    A better example might be

    "(weekend and away) not shenzhen"
    "weekend and away and shenzhen"

    Hey

Hey. Sorry for the trouble. But I just want to avoid double postings etc.

So, new example... I was searching for

    German and TV

The search result is that I also get threads in which only "German" is mentioned.

    Is there a solution? Thanks!!

Heh .. you're really picking the weakest links of the search function -- TV unfortunately does not work too well, as our database tends to ignore words with less than three characters.

Aha another case of modern search algorithms sacrificing completeness for the sake of performance.
