    Rules of this Forum

    Dear Admin,

I can't seem to find who you are or get a clear and concise answer to my question, therefore I'm writing this:

I've had several posts deleted as it is deemed "Advertising and or soliciting"

My question is very simple, what precisely constitutes this? I ask because it could easily be used as a blanket statement to suppress speech as anyone who supports a movement/idea/group/etc. could be accused of soliciting support or interest in that particular thing and by simply discussing anything we are intact engaging in some for of advertisement on it's behalf.

Therefore, what are the clear rules to all of this?

    Thanks

I can't speak for Shri or the other mods but it seems to me that if you are trying to discuss or promote a product / service / situation which would lead to personal gain then you would have to rely on the paid ad service for that.

If your sole purpose of the using the site is to promote something - then that falls under advertising / soliciting. Often, this is like porn - we'll know if it is, when we see it.

In your case, it was a couple of posts related your / your friend's facebook group.

Rules in general are very very very flexible, but if you have no posting history, then we'll be a lot more harsher.

As it stands, given that you're a new member, find another way to promote your facebook group - not on GeoExpat, regardless of its purpose.

Even products with products and services, we have a simple policy that members who have contributed the site, get a lot of freedom. We don't even bother taking payments from members (they're usually refunded if we can connect their login with with forum usage) who need to submit paid classifieds.

Also, I am not a huge fan of people promoting their facebook / whatsapp groups. Usually means they're not interested in engaging the community, usually just interested in leeching traffic.

    Why not use Facebook?

I have to add this, as the initial poster mentioned 'free speech', or the suppression of it. I am fully in favor of free speech, but this basically is a private board run by a commercial group. They decide what goes and what not, and they don't have to give a reason.

Been in this business long enough to know that "free speech" claims are usually hyperbolic and personal.

Just because we don't allow new users to say something, does not mean we don't allow everyone.

This above group was one of those new pro-democracy thingys.... but my stance remains the same. If it involved a regular user, no problems.
