New banner advert

This morning there is a new banner ad taking up a good portion of my lower window (maybe an eighth or more) placed in the lower part of the screen. It's not closeable and everything is scrolling behind it. I do not like it, it is intrusive. I avoid asiaxpat because their ads and page format are shocking- don't go their way!

I accept advertising is necessary but you have to allow people to view your site- irrelevant and badly placed ads do not help that to happen.

We're looking at different options at the moment. No need to get all worked up.

One of the options is to drop the multiple banners which slow down loading to just one banner in the footer.

Sizes are being played with... lets see where this ends up after the T8 / holiday tomorrow - usually low traffic times to test and trash.

Until we get viewability rates worked out (24-48 hour period) the banner is going to remain. After that, lets see... esp on a mobile view.

Just giving feedback- not overly excited. Just looked at the mobile version and it's even worse so... I will reserve my opinion.

I'm not a fan of it. I also realize I'm contributing exactly zero dollars to GXP operations and bills need to be paid.

Laptop. Windows 10. Chrome. I'm using an ad blocker so I just get a blank gray band.

On a mobile and I don't find it particularly annoying. In fact I hadn't taken any notice of it until this thread appeared.

Safari 15.0. It feel a bit 'letterboxed" between the top menu and the bottom ad banner. The content window is much reduced. It depends on your defaults for text size etc so my view may be worse than someone with smaller font selected. I just adjusted magnification up and down, and it changes the view significantly.

Safari on iPhone or a mac? Can you share a screenshot through [email protected] if the view where you feel it takes up too much real estate?

The menu experiment is next - probably this weekend. It should ideally scroll away.. You are right we do not want two sticky elements at the end of the day.

On desktop, as far I can tell, the advertising has just moved from the top and right of the screen to bottom. But it does seem to be a bit more annoying now when reading threads, as previously scroll down reading comments and the banner would scroll off the screen and I can read peoples comments as I scroll down. But now the advertising is persistent and always at the bottom, close to where my eyes are as I am reading whatever the last post it. So yeah it is more annoying, but I can live with it if it means shri gets a few more dollars in his pocket to keep the site running.
