Today's Lai See Column in SCMP

Can some one explain how a fall from C$20 to C$ 5.23 is equal to 95%

" Analysts have been thrown into disarray by the sensational claims against Hong Kong- and Canadian-listed Sino-Forest Corp by Carson Block's company Muddy Waters. The company's stock traded at about C$20 (HK$160) for most of last month when Credit Suisse, for example, reaffirmed its "outperform" C$28 target for the company. After Block's accusations that Sino-Forest had been inflating its assets the share price fell 95 per cent to C$5.23 on Friday. That stock had 2 big down days. Its been fun to watch.
    1) Down to $7.xx (down around 60% from prev close)
    2) Down to $4.xx (down around 30% from prev close)
add the 2 up and you get 95%

    Creative accounting indeed.

The SCMP's business writers are utterly innumerate - they demonstrate this pretty much every week in some way or other. And it's sad that their sub-editors don't seem to pick up on all the errors either.

(With honourable exceptions such as Jake van der Kamp, for example)

It's better than at the Standard. Over there, they are illegitimate.
