Shekels, and where to buy 'em?

Israeli currency, in cash form, that is...

I've asked my bank - Standard Chartered - and they looked at me as if I'd asked them to sell me some rotten fish.

I asked the Israeli consulate, who said they didn't know of anyone in HK selling shekels, and recommended I wait until I arrive in Israel (in a couple of weeks).

Anyone know any banks or reputable currency places who might be able to sell me a couple of $1000 worth of shekels?

(incidentally, the Berlin exchange company, where I usually go to get Asian currencies at least, has apparently closed down retail operation)

I'd go with the banker's advice. For obscure currencies like Shekel, get it when you are there.
Take USD with you (not HKD) and make sure you have a couple of 20s in there.

When you land, change 20 or 40 (just enough to get you a taxi or 2) and then find a decent money changer in the holy land.
