Mine is in a tshirt taken of me while eating breakfast in phuket
Sent from my GT-N7100 using GeoClicks Mobile
I have a head shot with a suit and tie and I am holding a mic. and you can see my company name behind my head for extra effect.
I agree that it should be professional. It irks me that one of my business partners doesn't do the same. He has a him standing in front of some historic building but you can't see his face much.
The photo should be professional looking. And a photo is a must. Most groups on Linkedin trash those with no photos.

For the people with small businesses and self employed. Do you really need a Linked in account nowadays to make it, would you say that it helped your business?
I am not a friend of social media (Geo is already addicting enough) so I have no accounts. I already spend too much time online.
For some other stuff that can benefit from photos, such as forum or blog comments, Google Profiles (Gmail, Groups, etc) I have noticed it's often a bit tricky to select the photo wisely. Most people don't have professional photos, and they might also see the coolness factor of the photo they chose a bit different than the viewer. Or maybe what they think was a big achievement and the photo symbolizes it, looks pretty lame.
My photos where mostly leftovers of some sports and outdoor activity since this was what I had on my computer and I have always created profiles on the fly without really thinking about it. Me on top of mountain, me with kid in front of hills in Guilin, paragliding, flying helicopter with headset and HK down in the background, etc... but definitely not good for business and LinkedIn I guess.
To have a face shot you can't be ugly, and you can't care about privacy. I, for one, don't want my face on the internet in too high resolution, I have played around with Google's Picasa a few years ago and I was a bit shocked how well that face recognition worked.

Mine is the professionally taken one that we did for the company. I voted "glamour" because it seemed to be the closest, but that word does rather conjure up an image of a model! (Which I am not LOL). But LinkedIn is for business so the photo should be a business photo.
Depends on the industry. A business suit could be the wrong image for many people.
