They are at the verge of a recession. Buying property is now a bit to soon to consider imo.

From my personal point of view (have a sister living there + am selling in UK), business sentiment and retail sales are extremely poor right now and no signs of improvement in sight. Generally 2009 will be considered a lost year for business in UK (and probably similar deal in EU).
