According to the Economist: China pulled 680 million people out of misery in 1981-2010, and reduced its extreme-poverty rate from 84% in 1980 to 10% now (2013). That's out of a total of nearly 1 billion worldwide. Without China's number, the world is actually worse off. China did more to alleviate extreme-poverty than India and all the countries in Africa.

That is true but it was a complete basket case beforehand. Primarily by focussing on basic education and roads. India could probably be more aggressive in pushing through reforms.

Now China is as rich as countries like Algeria but still some way to go until its people are as affluent as say Iranians.

Very true. China is politically repugnant in many ways, but one thing I will give them credit for is poverty alleviation. If Deng has done one thing right it is that

Algeria...Iran? Are we talking about the same two countries? What kind of measurements are you using to say Iran is much better off?

GDP per capita I would guess. China is way down the table.

No they are different countries low to middle income countries that have never escaped the middle income trap.

One has a population that is about as affluent as China and the other has a population that is richer than China. Being large does not mean governance is better. The Gini coefficient in China is very large so the in reality the majority of the population is much worse off.
