Just for information the current waiting list to see a public hospital Rheumatology specialist in HK is around 2 years, until that point you will only be able to get drugs your GP can prescribe unless you pay to see a specialist - approx $1000 per visit plus the cost of drugs (biologics are VERY expensive)"

2 years is indeed not very long.....
I still agree that the waiting time to see a specialist is very long. Hence the discussions above in this thread on how to shorten the waiting time. Also not ALL drugs are 'free' which should be true of any socialised health system that is trying to maximise social benefit with finite resources.

$1000 is not that much when you consider that the typical monthly premium for a good health insurance plan ($12M annual coverage) is $1000 per month, and that's with a $50k deductible. Also these plans cover drugs during hospitalization only. Drugs outside of hospitalization require an additional plan, and even then only cover up to $80k per year. One has to ask whether:

    a. this type of expense can be self insured ($80k per year)
    b. in the event that you need expensive drugs is $80k per year of coverage sufficient anyway?

May I ask whether you all are familiar with the specific benefits of your plans for outpatient pharmaceuticals? Are you sure they cover the cases you're concerned about?

Apologies if you felt I gave any indication of the fees for my medical insurance. I did not intend for you to think of any posters as being churlish.
