Marriage allowance

Hi,

My wife and I are migrating to HK from the UK in March next year, will we qualify for the HKD 216k(?) married persons allowance? If so how does this work, do we get HKD 216k each, or between us..?

You get HK$108K each and if you elect to be assessed jointly then effectively you get HK$216K to share. The IRD basically does the calculation both ways (separately and jointly) and gives you whichever would be the smaller bill.

Thanks. Does my wife have to be working for us to be able to claim either of these allowance amounts? Or is the fact that we are married enough?
