Week 3 - Occupy Central News / Discussions

One thread to rule them all ...

    From SCMP's live blog:

3.20pm: The Federation of Students warned the government that they would “escalate” their action if it refused to come to the negotiating table with acceptable terms.Federation secretary Alex Chow Yong-kang, appearing in a press conference with other protest leaders, said: “If they do not give us a just and reasonable answer to all the occupiers, there is no reason to persuade people from retreating.
"If the government keeps denying the meeting, we could see that one of the options is to block the government building again.”
Scholarism's Joshua Wong and Occupy Central co-founder Benny Tai reiterated calls for the public to gather on Harcourt Road and around the government headquarters in Admiralty.
Chow said adjustments would be made if the government shows genuine, good intentions. "It really depends on the terms and conditions offered by the government for us to adjust the meaning and strategic locations of our occupying movement," Chow said.

4.40pm: It seems Hong Kong's top leaders won't be in town this weekend. Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor heads to Guangzhou tomorrow to attend a forum and trade fair jointly organised by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau.

Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying will also travel there on Sunday to attend a conference with leaders of Macau and the Pearl River Delta provinces.

Commerce Secretary Gregory So Kam-leung, development chief Paul Chan Mo-por, and Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Secretary Paul Chan Mo-por will also join the trade fair and forum.

Lam is expected back on Sunday, while the rest will return on Monday afternoon.

Seems like the government is pretty confident they can wait out the protesters given their arrogance and indifference to the protester's demands.

Or more likely as cookie said, they are heading up north to receive instructions from their Beijing masters on what to do next. Makes sense, why suddenly pull out of a planned meeting over such weak reason as lack of "sincerity" by the protesters. More likely they need further directions from Beijing.

Which brings to mind, what is Beijing thinking right now? Content with the current government approach? Increasingly frustrated by the protesters? If it is the latter case, they might be demanding more hard-line action from the HK gov on the protesters...

Seems like Jackie Chan has to wad in with his big mouth again and surprise, surprise, denounce the OC protesters and for Hong Kongers to "love" the country:

Jackie Chan criticises economic cost of Occupy Central, calls on Hongkongers to ‘love the country’ | South China Morning Post

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that his son (also an actor) was busted by the Chinese police with drugs. He has another incentive to be on the good side of the CCP? Nooooo, he must be saying this from the bottom of his heart :
Chinese cops formally arrest Jackie Chan's son over drugs

    10,000 plus in Admiralty tonight.

I was looking for the book "how not to manage civil protests" in the HK library but the only copy seems to have been taken out by C. Lam

Jackie Chan is no friend to Hong Kong’s protesters - The Washington Post

    Apparently, Jackie Chan said this:

"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said. "I'm really confused now. If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's very chaotic. Taiwan is also chaotic."

Chan added: "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

    Seriously?!

Think someone has forgotten which country really gave him international status!
