Demosisto wkly program on D100
(hosts this wk: Joshua Wong & Derek Lam)
Random notes (rough)
- Joshua & Derek have been doing most of the hosting because they live closest to the studio - this week the program was pre-recorded
- they discuss community work in Tin Wan & the CE election
Community work in Tin Wan
- Joshua is now focused on community work
- Tin Wan is an area with an average monthly income of HKD 15,000 - a lot of seniors live there
- around 12,000 people rely on this one 4 level shopping mall that is part of Tin Wan Estate (public housing estate)
- Link REIT sold it to a Chinese enterprise, who then leased it for 15 years to Nord Anglia International School (Early Years campus - 500 pupils)
- fees for the school range from HKD 75,000 to 150,000 per year
- construction will be completed this June & the school will open in August (the construction has disturbed the residents ie. strong lights at night affect sleep etc.)
- the school will take up 3.5 levels of the 4 level mall (leaving local residents with not much mall & having to go farther away for their necessities)
- the construction has shut down an escalator and now seniors & limited mobility residents have to go up & down a very steep hill (that even the young & able-bodied say can be challenging) ie. having to control wheelchairs/walkers going downhill & then going back uphill with one's purchases - it's been lucky there haven't been accidents
- District Councillor Chan Fu-ming is indifferent ie. office opens at 2 pm, not always open, no response etc. - scores points by being 1st in fundraising - 1st elected in 2004 - then ran unopposed til now (which is a bit odd for HK Island)
- nothing was ever communicated to the local residents
- in addition - there are 4 mainland tourist hotels & the 2 main restaurants only cater to mainland tour groups, not locals (they need to take a minibus to Aberdeen) & everything is in simplified Chinese - the tour buses head out at the same time as the rush hour traffic
- there will also be more private cars as toddlers will not be taking public transport to school
- all this is poor planning & neglect - no benefit to the local residents & what they did have has been taken away - no one is looking out for their interests
- when Demosisto was scouting locations for their Southern District office, they were hoping to set up in that mall - after that didn't come to fruition, they still remained in the area to distribute leaflets & through observation & interacting with the local residents came to understand what had transpired
- Demosisto is following up with the Education Bureau etc. - they're also consulting with Eddie Chu's team & Edward Yiu - Agnes Chow is taking a closer look at the documentation - there's been no response from the Chinese enterprise, they have an office in Central, there is no email & their website is in simplified - they also have an office on the mainland - Demosisto thought about going to that office to protest, but alas, they've been blacklisted
Nathan Law, Joshua & Tiffany Yuen made an appointment to meet with the principal of Nord Anglia International School. One can see from the signs what was agreed on.

There's also been an article in Apple Daily.
CE "election"
- Demosisto make it clear they are against Carrie Lam - and they are not part of the "scorched earth policy" camp
- they talk about how legislators Long Hair (Leung Kwok-hung - LSD) & Slow Beat (Raymond Chan - People Power) have been attacked (verbally/online) by pro-democracy John Tsang supporters (after all their service) - all this infighting over the "election" of a pro-establishment CE candidate - (some pro-democracy supporters were thinking of putting up a giant banner on Lion Rock with "I want John Tsang" on it & there was a brief suggestion of holding a rally for him)
- no matter how Nathan votes, this will not impact Carrie Lam - what impacts Carrie Lam is how many pro-establishment votes she loses
- in Legco, Long Hair is the most radical & Nathan is the most representative of the Umbrella Movement - if they come out & say they support John Tsang - if all 5 legislators (Long/Slow/Lau/Law/Chu) announce they will vote for John Tsang - if the self-determination camp does this - will this help or damage John Tsang - is this sound strategy to have radicals support him
- do you want to see Long Hair standing on the street in a John Tsang campaign outfit
- what John Tsang is missing is pro-establishment votes
- if the Democratic Party votes for John Tsang, that is to be expected - but not for Demosisto
- we have a different political stance - we did not form a party because we are young - we are for democratic self-determination - we support democracy, not ABC (Anyone But CY/Carrie Lam) - we were always against ABC - we want better (not just to settle) - this was a promise in our platform
- Demosisto/Nathan Law STAND FIRM - they hope those who withdraw their support, will support other parties/groups that adhere to their principles/promises
Notes:
- not every pro-democracy citizen is "all-in John Tsang", there are those who say the blank voters represent them & are doing exactly what they want
Nathan Law's formal statement on his CE "election" voting stance - which hasn't changed - just an FYI:

(Nathan - excerpts:
If John Tsang loses the CE election, will he go on to lead the democratic movement ?
Mainstream public opinion also supported Link REIT, high speed rail funding & the election of CY Leung.
"All-in John Tsang" could drain all the power of the democracy movement.)
