Elsie Leung, former justice chief and a Basic Law Committee member, said in a newspaper article on Monday that it’s unrealistic to demand a timeframe for universal suffrage as well as to ask the NPC Standing Committee to abolish functional constituencies. Such demands would be tantamount to rejecting the NPC committee’s decision, she said.

They are not even pretending to follow the basic law anymore. The basic law mandates universal suffrage for legco by gradual and orderly progress. It is perfectly within the basic la we to ask for a timetable now 17 years have passed. Asking for a definition of and commitment to universal suffrage in 2020 Lego elections is not against the npc decision. It is entirely in line with it. The 8/31 decision said legco may be elected by universal suffrage after the CE is elected by universal suffrage. They are asking for when as t the 8/31 decision said just a few months ago. Let us not forget that the pro-BJ were previously arguing that the words 'may' in NPC decisions means 'must' in line with Chinese law.

Anyone stupid enough to think it is the pan dems who block compromise should heed Carrie's words from same article where she says there will be no trading or concessions: take it or leave it.

    Gatts and shri like this.
