This is another crucial (and neglected) point I think. Simply put, China does not have a clue when it comes to persuading people to identify with them though non-coercive means. Not surprisingly since in an authoritarian system its "my way or the highway". They simply don't know how to win the "hearts and minds" of people. They don't realize that HK people are different from mainlanders in that we can think for ourselves and make up our own minds to decide.
Sometimes, I think the Cultural Revolution is still with us in certain ways, this united front coordinated attacks on those deemed to be CCP's enemy is a clear example. Not a comforting thought, is it?
