Posts 3760 and 3761 about the student movement are food for thought.

I once read an article by a crusty old gent who said that student movements are only important in places that are politically immature. If so, HK is politically immature. Did you know that? But also, the students, even the 'nativists', must be aware of the Chinese tradition of student protest - not only in 1989 but also in 1919.

According to the article from Foreign Policy in 3760, one reason for the splits from the Federation of Students is disagreement over non-violence. The author implies that the protests against tourist-traders were effective because they were aggressive. The Occupy movement, which was apparently ineffective, was praised, on GeoExpat and elsewhere, for being non-violent, restrained, socially responsible.

To me as an outsider, the dispute explained in 3761 about whether to stress "the underlying notion that we are all Chinese" or to stress building a democratic HK sounds like the kind of theoretical quibble that makes political movements look silly. In Gulliver's Travels there is a great dispute about whether a boiled egg should be cut open at the broad or narrow end.

Post 3725 - Anson Chan and Carrie Lam. Have you noticed that, at least when speaking English, the two sound almost the same? They both have a very nice, precise English accent.

Meanwhile, a rally held by the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (Pro-Beijing) held a rally around Tamar, Admiralty, demanding for better worker rights.

However, word has broken out that Carrie Lam has apparently 'hijacked' the rally, using it as another platform to promote the 2017 Political Reform Package

Knowing the tires aren't round, you say that with buses there's no difference between genuine and fake. You insist on not listening to what other people are telling you. As a result you get on the bus, then discover that it doesn't move. Isn't that foolish ?

What is a real bus ?

Green figure: I want a genuine bus ! The tires aren't round, how can it move ?

Yellow figure: Don't want a fake bus !

    Green figure: Don't get on ! It's a fake bus !

Redhead: What ? There's a bus right there and you don't even get on ? Are you a fool ?

Burgundyhead: Even if you don't want to get on, don't block others from getting on !

Green figure: You didn't even know whether the tires were round or square - you saw a bus and just got on. In the end you got on the bus, then discovered that it didn't start, so what did you get on for . . .

Everyone on the bus: Damn ! The bus obviously had tires, so why doesn't it move ?
