    "Spontaneous public protest" =
performed or occurring as a result of a sudden impulse or inclination and without premeditation or external stimulus.

Events that last for weeks on end and being mass organised for thousands of people can only be defined as "spontaneous public protest" by a simple-minded pre-adolescent boy.

So, are you saying he is wrong, or that you have been bettered by a simple-minded pre-adolescent boy?

I think we have to assume that insult sounded better in its original Chinese form.

Perhaps you weren't in HK during the time. Surely external stimulus is needed for all protests. For occupy HK it was clearly the NPCSC mandating the pre-selection of candidates for the Chief Executive selection process and the use of tear gas against students.

The event started on campuses and then spread quickly to three areas in town, Mong Kok, Causeway Bay and Admiralty. If there was an overall detailed plan to do this the students did a very good job of making it look very haphazard and spontaneous.

I am not sure why you think the length something endures is determined by the spontaneity of its starting. That makes no sense.
